What is Electropolishing?

Electropolishing is the increasingly popular method of brightening and deburring stainless steel electrochemically, producing a bright, smooth, reflective surface.  Yet, unlike Electroplating, Electropolishing does not add metal, it removes some. It removes enough to round off the edges and reflect light at a better angle. The stainless item is immersed in an acid solution through which an electric current is passed. Just like in electropolating, but by reversing the polarity (making the stainless item the anode), electropolishing removes a miniscule amount of surface metal. Electropolishing accommodates a broad range of products. It can be used on most types of stainless steel, and our 10ft. long, 4 ft. deep electrochemical tanks can handle a wide variety of sizes and shapes. These are some of the products we have electropolished here at Control: medical, surgical and dental instruments; boating, fishing and swimming pool accessories; tennis racquets; pharmaceutical research equipment; meat and fish hooks; stampings; wire goods; aircraft components, etc.

What is Passivating?

Passivation is a corrosion control process more economical than Electropolishing. It promotes the natural tendency of the surface to oxidize. It does not change the appearance of the metal. The passivating process purifies the surface and therefore enhances corrosion resistance
